Help China End Dog Killings Posted 08/26/2006
Two weeks ago, in scenes right out of your worst nightmares, Chinese officials began conducting mass killings of dogs in a horrific and totally ineffective response to several human deaths from rabies. As Chinese families watched, strays and their own dogs, including many who had been vaccinated against the disease, were dragged from houses or seized during walks and then beaten to death or thrown—struggling for their lives—into trucks before being electrocuted.

More than 50,000 dogs were mercilessly killed in the first few days after the government's decree. The fate of many dogs now hangs in the balance.
What could be very promising news: Our Asia-Pacific affiliate has received tentative info rmation indicating that the Nanjing dog slaughter of hundreds of thousands of dogs will not go forward and that Jining will not kill dogs en masse. We understand that Mouding has also stopped killing dogs, although we are still trying to confirm this report. Remember, however, that Mouding is where most dogs have already been killed. PETA Asia-Pacific's chief representative in Hong Kong is in touch with veterinary services about a dog vaccination program that looks promising in at least one part of the country.
Not so good news: There is still much work to be done. Some villagers in Jining are still killing dogs themselves, and a dog pound has been set up, which is another worry given the appalling conditions of Chinese pounds.

One desperate Chinese woman wrote to an American friend, “I¢m really worried about the dogs and cats. But I can't do anything in my country! Could you do me a favor? If it is possible, could you find some info rmation and send it back to your country? Public opinion maybe can stop this silly activity! This is the only [thing] I can do for the harmless animals.”

PETA has received more than 15,000 letters from citizens around the world that we will deliver in person to Chinese authorities. Please get family members, friends, coworkers, neighbors, delivery people, and everyone else you know to add their voices today.
Photos of the mass dog murders are being sent around by compassionate Chinese citizens who are desperate for help from the international community.
Please give a generous donation to PETA today to help us in our vigorous fight to stop animal abuse worldwide.

Chinese officials brutally killed 50,000 dogs as part of a crackdown on a rabies outbreak.
Posted 08/03/2006
I am shocked and deeply disturbed. I recently found out that officials in a southwestern Chinese county brutally slaughtered 50,000 dogs in a government-ordered crackdown after three people died of rabies. Tell the US Ambassador to condemn this animal cruelty and prevent more from occuring.
This was not humane euthanasia. Dogs being walked were seized from their owners and beaten to death on the spot. Killing teams also entered villages at night creating noise to get dogs barking, and then beat the animals to death.
What's worse, the slaughter was completely preventable. Had the government been more attentive and proactive about rabies vaccination, rabies would not have become a problem in the first place. Only 3 percent of dogs are vaccinated against rabies and more than 2,000 people die of the disease each year. Take Action.
Regardless of cultural differences, the brutal killing of innocent life, human or not, is unacceptable. This must not happen again in the future! It is essential that the Chinese government place an emphasis on widespread rabies vaccinations to protect human health and prevent the unnecessary loss of animal life.
Sign this petition calling on the US Ambassador to China, Clark T. Randt, to urge the Chinese government to adopt a rabies prevention program that protects animals from the disease and inhumane crackdowns if outbreaks occur: http://go.care2.com/e/LZt/Oo/Nu7M
Thank you for making a difference today!
